Everything along the yard lines and under the stadium lights!
Haven’t ever been to a literary reading, and wondering what they’re all about?
Have favorite stories from Building the Green Machine you’d like to hear read aloud? Or haven’t checked out the book yet and you’re looking for a preview?
Or, simply looking for something to do in Chicago on a Tuesday night?
I’ll be reading at two very different events in October. Here’s the info:
* “Quickies” reading
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14
Inntertown Pub, 1935 W. Thomas, Chicago
Quickies is a series that jumps the track of the usual literary fare and offers short, edgy stories that won’t keep you there all night. The Oct. 14 reading is a special lineup of Quickies veterans, reading 55-word stories. Yes, that’s right. Colt can devote 500 pages to the Cavaliers but also compress enough into 55 words to entertain you. Well, hopefully he can. Stop by and find out.
Visit http://quickieschicago.blogspot.com/ for more info.
* Columbia College Creative Nonfiction Week
1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21
Film Row Cinema
1104 S. Wabash Ave., 8th floor, Chicago
I’ll be reading excerpts from Building the Green Machine as part of a multi-department student reading.

Hope to see you there!

Howdy all.
Well, the 2008 tour season is over, but Drum Corps Lunch is just getting heated up.
Our continued look at marching music and the media turns to the book world this week. Colt Foutz will be chatting with fellow authors G.M. Kuzma, Jeremy Van Wert and Courtney Brandt about their experiences covering the drum corps and marching band activities in extended form.
G.M. is the author of a self-published diary of his 1994 season as a member of the Blue Knights: “On the field, from Denver, Colorado… the Blue Knights!”
Spike’s self-published memoir, “Not for the Faint of Heart,” covers his three life-changing summers as a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard.
And Courtney’s self-published young adult series kicked off with “The Line,” about a high school girl trying to make the drum line of her marching band.
The four have known each other for a little over a year now, and will chat about their personal experiences completing their projects and getting word out in the world, including publishing, marketing, treatment from DCI and the powers-that-be, and connecting with fans and readers.
Tune in at 7:30 p.m. Central on Monday, Aug. 18 by visiting http://blogtalkradio.com/drumcorpslunch.
Call in with your questions, and chat LIVE with Jeremy, G.M., Courtney and Colt.

It all comes down to this.
Seven weeks on the road. Three months of summer rehearsals. A year’s worth of preparations. The efforts of a few hundred people – volunteers, management, instructors and members, not to mention the lung-power of devoted fans – hanging on the outcome of three days’ competition.
DCI once again presents its three-round circus of competitions – quarterfinals, semifinals and finals – to crown its 2008 world champion. The action unfolds Aug. 7 to 9 in Bloomington, Ind., where the Cavaliers will be gunning for their 8th world title, and 21st summer-ending championship overall.
For those who have seen SAMURAI, your blood has been stirred. Perhaps, even, your socks sent shushing up and down. That, as well as a summer devoted to improving musicianship, and making unforgettable memories, is the reward for members and fans alike.
But who are we kidding? We want another title back in Rosemont. And this summer, the Cavies, Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment are running bell-and-bell for the finish line. The Devils had been in the catbird seat headed undefeated in DCI East Championships in Allentown. Samurai sliced through their hopes to finish with a 0 in the loss column, with the Cavaliers outlasting their Concord, Calif. rivals by a few tenths. Meanwhile, Phantom is surging at shows not featuring the Green Machine or Devils in the lineup.
How’s that for drama?
There are three ways to get a taste of the excitement this week. One, is get your butt down Indianapolis way and take in the spectacle for yourself. Another is to catch DCI quarterfinals LIVE on the big screen at a theater near you. (See previous post below) A third, for folks in the Chicago area, is to pay a pittance – 10 bucks – to catch the Cavaliers’ Samurai program, plus their 60th anniversary corps performing classic anthems from championships past, PLUS several of the guys tuning up their solo and ensemble pieces, all part of the first-annual CAVA-JAM at Naperville’s Benedetti-Wehrli stadium.
Check out the calendar of events below. And stop by any of them – well, except that theater near you – to chat with Cavaliers founder Don Warren and BTGM author Colt Foutz, and to get your copy of the book. The hardcover edition is selling out fast. Grab your copy today, and savor the stories for years to come!

BTGM author Colt Foutz and Cavaliers founder Don Warren will be available to chat and sign copies of the book at the CPI souvenir trailer.
Friday, Aug. 8

Saturday, Aug. 9
DCI Finals at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, IN
It comes down to this. The Cavaliers are gunning for DCI title number 8 as a capper to their 60th summer. Samurai will have to cut through 11 top corps to stand alone.
BTGM author Colt Foutz and Cavaliers founder Don Warren will be available to chat and sign copies of the book at the CPI souvenir trailer.
It’s been a wild and crazy summer. Thanks to everyone I’ve met and spent time with for making it one to remember. See you in Indy, or further on down the road, and…
GO, GO GREEN MACHINE!
